Countdown to Roads & Transit vote

Roads & TransitAbsentee ballots go out next week, and the pro-and-con campaigns will shift into their highest possible gears as we near the vote on the regional "Roads & Transit" measure - Proposition 1.

The endorsement list for the Roads & Transit plan includes Bellevue Downtown Association, the City of Bellevue and Bellevue Chamber of Commerce.  Across the region, the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Seattle Association, Washington Association of Realtors and Washington Roundtable also support the plan, along with major employers Microsoft, Boeing and Puget Sound Energy.

With a yes vote, the Eastside will gain more than $5.5 billion of projects over the next 20 years.  In addition to the Seattle-Downtown Bellevue-Overlake light rail extension, project plans include capacity expansions and chokepoint fixes on I-405 through Downtown Bellevue, as well as lane additions in both directions of I-405 between Renton and Bellevue, and a critical $1.1 billion contribution to replace the 520 bridge with a six-lane structure.

The projects will be paid for with a six-tenths sales tax increase (6 cents on a $10 purchase) and a car tab fee of $8 per $1,000 in vehicle value.  Sound Transit recently mailed out this overview of Proposition 1 as required by state law.  The piece includes a list of all Roads & Transit projects, plus financing, ridership and accountability details.
