South Kirkland Park-and-Ride
garage now open

King County Metro Transit's new three-story garage at South Kirkland Park-and-Ride near State Route 520 is finally open for commuters.

The new garage on the border of Bellevue and Kirkland opened Sept. 5 and has 530 parking spaces, in addition to 260 spaces in a surface parking lot. The Park-and-Ride previously had 600 spaces, and will top out at 850 spaces in 2014 once construction is complete on the mixed-use housing project next door. Together, the garage and housing comprise a transit-oriented development (TOD), successfully concentrating housing and a transit hub to reduce the need to drive or own a vehicle.

The cities of Bellevue and Kirkland collaborated to help make the project a reality. "Public transportation is contributing to a better quality of life on the Eastside, and the local economy is thriving because transit has kept the region moving," Bellevue Mayor Conrad Lee said.

Service revisions starting late September

Transit service changes will begin on Sept. 28, but there are only a few buses in Bellevue that will be affected. Downtown commuters should heed service changes to Metro routes 211, 212, 215, 216 and 342; and Sound Transit routes 550, 554, 560 and 566. Not all routes are being cut back; some will actually have additional trips.

Red timetables for Metro routes and orange Rider Alerts brochures reflecting the changes are now available, as well as updated trip planners on Metro and Sound Transit.
