Another great year in the books
Leslie Lloyd, BDA President
We're pleased to bring you Kemper Freeman’s observations from his recent visits to Dubai. Talk about a boomtown. As he notes, Downtown Bellevue and Dubai are both seeing unprecedented growth, but the overall scale of new development is considerably different.
Around town, the festive collection of Bellevue Magic Season events is again a big hit. Reports show attendance is up over last year; though avoiding major wind and snow storms definitely helps. We are fortunate to have such strong community partners who year after year deliver for Bellevue, from the Botanical Garden and the City to Kemper Development Company and Meydenbauer Center.
World champion figure skater and Edmonds native Rosalynn Sumners even pitched in for the BDA with a Group Health Ice Arena segment on KOMO 4’s Northwest Afternoon. Sumners graciously offered tips on camera for first time and beginning skaters.
We also recognize and thank Warren Koons for his excellent year of service as BDA Chair. Under his watch, we navigated a challenging dialogue on the roads and transit measure, and I believe we’re even stronger as a Board given the process. Warren provided steady and well-measured leadership this past year.
Taking another recent look back, we want to again thank Erik Nordstrom, president of Nordstrom stores, and Bellevue Square Nordstrom manager Kris Allan for presenting at our December Membership Meeting at The Parlor Billiards & Spirits.
Coming up in January, join us as we welcome Bert Valdman, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Puget Sound Energy. He will speak to a subject all too often taken for granted – our infrastructure and the issues around our growing demand in Downtown Bellevue for electricity and natural gas. The Membership Meeting will be 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., Tuesday, January 22, at Puget Sound Energy.
And just another reminder to “Save the Date” - February 21, 2008 - for the 34th BDA Annual Celebration at Meydenbauer Center. We will feature the 2007 Downtown Bellevue Place Making Awards and honor other significant achievements shaping downtown's success. A special highlight will be the live entertainment, but I’ll leave that surprise to the invitation – look for it in the mail in January.
Then we move on to more jazz, and even more jazz. Planning is underway for an expanded Bellevue Live Jazz line-up leading up to Memorial Day weekend 2008. You will hear more about that in the weeks to come as the concert line-up takes shape.
From everyone here on staff at the BDA, thanks to all again for another wonderful year of making a great place together. To you and yours, enjoy the best this season has to offer!
